i do
kris|~/packages$ pacman -Ss libstdc++5
and i get no output. So I do:
kris|~/packages$ echo $?
0

then i do
kris|~/packages$ pacman -Ss libstdc
current/libstdc++5 3.3.6-1
GNU Standard C++ library version 3
kris|~/packages$ echo $?
0

pacman uses regex. Try:
bash-3.1$ pacman -Ss libstdc\\+\\+5
current/libstdc++5 3.3.6-1
GNU Standard C++ library version 3
