The argument is this is a security feature for hackboxes, especially RPis under Arch ARM. It'd be a privacy option for journalists and such in case their machine is compromised. When compromised, they give up the nuke password instead of the real one, which wipes the box. It doesn't beat a smart forensics team that images the disk first, but it helps.
