Hi, when connecting my external USB hard drive it grinds away for a few seconds, then stops, and repeats. I have attached the dmesg.

Other USB devices seem to function OK in Arch and I've tried the drive on another linux distro that I keep in a dusty spare corner of my computer and it works without a fuss. I originally raised the issue on the forums and another user has reported a similar issue.

does this still occur on 2.6.18?

Slighty different. It fails several times and then succeeds, I have posted a failure and success from dmesg. This is kernel 2.6.18-ARCH.

As a side note (if it helps) the drive also no longer works upon upgrading ubuntu to the development version, I believe this was a move from kernel 2.6.15 (which worked ok) to 2.5.17.

I couldn't find an easy way of downgrading the kernel in arch to a stock 2.6.15 kernel to see if it's a recent kernel problem.
