attempting to custom compile a kernel using the beyond sources, compiles goes through fine, however, on the make modules_install:

I had the same issue; deselecting "Tickless System (Dynamic Ticks)" from "Processor type and features" in menuconfig fixed this for me, IIRC. Of course, the kernel doesn't run in tickless mode now.

will be fixed in beyond3 as I've dropped dynticks temporarily. There's a test version up at:
http://iphitus.loudas.com/beyond/2.6.17/2.6.17-beyond3/

however this may change before release pending on suspend2 testing results.
