The screen blacks out when modesetting happens and never comes back. This is a significant problem for me, since the lts version is now (for a while now) affected and it's the same on other distributions. I'm surprised that I haven't seen much else on the internet about this (see the two forum discussions linked on the above bug report). I know it's a relatively cheap laptop, but it's intel. I would have expected a lot more people out there to be using the same hardware and experiencing this problem.

* config and/or log files etc.
Unfortunately, as you can see at the freedesktop bug report, I don't know how to get the log info to save early. If someone could tell me how, I'd be happy to upload that.

I should have said versions 4.3.4 to current. Version 4.7.4 is still unusable for me due to this problem.

is this issue still valid with newer kernel?

This is still valid. Thanks for asking. I just tried updating to 4.13.5 with the same result. I made a usb installer with the arch iso, and got the same result trying to boot that. However, when I change my bios boot mode to "legacy" mode, it boots. I get a different bootloader in that case (so maybe this is a problem with systemd-boot). I can't boot from hard drive in that mode, since it says there's no bootable device.

ok, it seems an hardware-related issue.

Can you share your hardware details, laptop model, bios/firmware version?
Do you have the latest bios/firmware version available for your laptop?

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 15 3552 with (from lspci):
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Device 22b1 (rev 21)
which (from what I've internetted) is Cherryview/Braswell.

And yes, I have the latest BIOS update from Dell.
