Please reinstall gzip, somehow the version from klibc or busybox got on your system, possibly by unpacking a cpio image as root ;)

:( You were right. It looks like I fubar'd my system pretty well by extracting the kernel26.img cpio archive onto my root partition. I wrote a script to find all the packages of the files that got replaced, and re-install them using pacman. The kernel compiles OK now!
