Description:

The upstream patch [1] that adds the functionality says it perfectly

"... serves no purpose on a desktop
system without these and just pulls in a long chain of unwanted
dependencies."

Can we please carry the patch [1] locally (and make the dependencies optional) until an upstream version is available.
