I managed to build OpenSCAD from source (github master branch) with Qt 5.7 (latest Arch package) and run it successfully, so I don't think there's any reason to hold back anymore.

All packages IMO need to work on reducing the need for Qt 4, so that someday it can practically be left uninstalled.

Also requested upstream to change the readme to reflect the fact that you can do this: https://github.com/openscad/openscad/issues/1736

Maybe you should talk to upstream first? Qt5 has an issue where the viewport goes completely black. We used to use qt5 and stopped at their request.

https://github.com/openscad/openscad/commit/456e344098dfbb20704d45456e14b3a8c5c1f293

The CMake build in master *only* supports Qt5, and the script they use for detecting your distro and installing build dependencies specifies Qt5 on a variety of distros including Arch Linux.

Since there hasn't been a release in 2 years, maybe it would be worth asking for a new release?

They say Qt5 is solid now, switched. (And poked them about a new release too.)
