Just to let people know:

There is a bug in the kernel 2.6.17 affecting speedtouch modems. Internet connection is cut when large files are downloaded. See the links below:

Hopefully this is fixed soon and the fix is included in Arch's kernel packages.

I not sure since I have an ethernet coonnection now and I'm not using the modem anymore.

accorind to kernel bug report it works with .18 kernel, closing this now
