Description:
Since the update to freetype 2.6.4 I noticed that some fonts in firefox were rendered quite horribly, see attached screenshot. When zoomed in far enough the fonts are rendered correctly, but most common text sizes are affected. This also happens in luakit, so is independent of the browser

I wish the new environment option was better documented.
Anyway, both FT2_SUBPIXEL_HINTING=1 and 2 show this behavior, only 0 renders without horrible distortion.
The screenshot was made without any such env variable.

Additional info:
* package version(s)
freetype2 2.6.4

Reason for closing:  Upstream

this problem was already reported here :  FS#49981

and yes the only usefull setting is :

FT2_SUBPIXEL_HINTING=0

freetype2 archlinux package is patched ( 3 patchs ) and I wonder if it's normal ?

because in upstream version I don't see these 3 patchs, the culprit could be these patches :

https://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/packages.git/tree/trunk?h=packages/freetype2

Potomic, calm down. This is a different issue, look at the screenshot.

Just because you don't like the new upstream defaults doesn't give you permission to whine and throw a temper tantrum.

@Scimmia : I am very calm, this is not a "temper tantrum",

english is not my first language ( I'm french ), sometimes the words chosen by me ( syntax, formulation ) may be badly interpreted and give the impression of anger, because of my lack of english proficiency

but it is absolutely not my mood in my messages, I'm a very calm :)

for  FS#49987  you consider it as a different issue, but these bugs could be triggered by the same root cause

for  FS#49981  I'm sad that you closed it with the mention "not a bug, just a configuration problem", but I respect your decision

Monochrome rendering worsening is probably expected; Please bring this upstream.
