I'm finding this issue on a lot of other applications now, too, and I woner if it should be refiled under GTK3 rather than thunderbird. Tried to start a new bug #49455, but am not sure if that's the right strategy.

The GTK maintainers are also maintainers of thunderbird, so they're already assigned here.

Wondering if this is reproducible by others or if I should look for causes in my setup. Have you guys been able to reproduce or work around?

Removing several old gtkrc files created by very old kde4 installations did the trick:

/home/matt/.config/gtkrc
/home/matt/.kde4/share/config/gtkrc
/home/matt/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css

Not sure but looks like the culprit could have been .config/gtkrc (attached), which contained a number of styles.

Requesting closure but if someone has time to explain to me how exactly the situation arose I'd appreciate the feedback.
