DetailsI realized that my evince doesn't use the cairo backend (it was slow and not nicely anti-aliased). after recompiling poppler on my machine, it does. Maybe the machine poppler was compiled on had no or a strange cairo version?

Reason for closing: Won't fix
Additional comments about closing: Won't fix until the cairo backend is as good as the splash backend. The cairo backend is very slow, eats memory and has bugs displaying quite some PDF files.
