Details

in the vlc package post_install() there is:
update-desktop-database -q

On a newly installed system I got:

installing vlc... done.
No theme index file in 'usr/share/icons/hicolor'.
If you really want to create an icon cache here, use --ignore-theme-index.
/var/lib/pacman/local/vlc-0.8.5-5/install: line 3: update-desktop-database: command not found

There should be desktop-file-utils in depends.
