Description:
My bytmax98080 sound card does not initialize after upgrading to linux-4.5.0-1.
/proc/asound only shows the HDMI audio output, and there is no trace of byt-max when I run dmesg.

Downgrading to linux-4.4.5-1 brings back audio.

Additional info:
linux-4.5.0-1 on Dell Chromebook 11 2015 (3120) with
* HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
and
* byt-max98090 - byt-max98090

I Cannot supply any meaningful log-files as there is no information about byt-max98080 when using linux-4.5.0-1.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Upgrade to linux-4.5.0-1
2. Reboot

Detail originally from  FS#48948  - [linux] 4.5-1 breaks Broadwell-U I2S Audio

After upgrading the linux kernel (4.4.5-1 -> 4.5-1), the built-in I2S sound card (Intel Broadwell-U Audio Controller) on my Dell XPS 13 (9343) disappears.

This appears to be due to building the kernel with DW_DMAC_CORE as modular. Apparently, to enable SND_SOC_INTEL_BROADWELL_MACH, it must now be built-in. (Source: https://stijn.tintel.eu/blog/2016/03/14/i2s-audio-on-xps13-linux-45)

# zcat /proc/config.gz | grep "DW_DMAC_CORE=\|DW_DMAC=\|DMADEVICES="
CONFIG_DMADEVICES=y
CONFIG_DW_DMAC_CORE=m
CONFIG_DW_DMAC=m

Additional info:
Rolling back to linux 4.4.5-1 resolves this issue.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Check for sound card in 4.4.5-1
# aplay -l -L | grep broadwell
sysdefault:CARD=broadwellrt286
broadwell-rt286,
card 1: broadwellrt286 [broadwell-rt286], device 0: System Playback/Capture (*) []
card 1: broadwellrt286 [broadwell-rt286], device 1: Offload0 Playback (*) []
card 1: broadwellrt286 [broadwell-rt286], device 2: Offload1 Playback (*) []

2. Upgrade to 4.5-1

3. Note the absence of the sound card
# aplay -l -L | grep broadwell

I incorrectly reopened an old issue related to the 4.4 kernel for the Dell XPS 2015. This report is the actual issue for 4.5. To confirm, this causes sound on the Dell XPS 2015 (9434) to stop working as well.
Comment by Igor (igorpetrov) - Thursday, 14 April 2016, 21:20 GMT
Confirm broken sound on Dell XPS 13 (broadwell-rt286) for Kernel 4.5.0-1.

Same problem on an Asus Chromebook C200 (Bay Trail-M).
Module snd-soc-sst-byt-max98090-mach.ko is absent in newer kernels (since first 4.5 RC) so the sound card is not recognized at all.
Workaround is to downgrade to an older kernel release or switch to linux-lts.
Comment by Milena C (hyukz) - Saturday, 16 April 2016, 03:20 GMT
Confirming once again for Dell XPS 13 (9343). Sound card broadwell-rt286 fails to be recognized. Switching to LTS fixed the issue.
Comment by Francisco Cribari (cribari) - Saturday, 16 April 2016, 11:35 GMT
I confirm that as well: soundcard not recognized in Dell XPS 13 (9343, bios A07) with kernel 4.5.
Comment by Tobias Powalowski (tpowa) - Sunday, 17 April 2016, 19:02 GMT
Should be fixed in 4.5.1 from [testing]
Comment by Brandon Thomas (uncon) - Sunday, 17 April 2016, 19:17 GMT
This is not fixed for me in linux-4.5.1-1 from [testing] (Dell XPS 13 9343).

# zgrep "DW_DMAC_CORE=\|DW_DMAC=\|DMADEVICES=" /proc/config.gz
CONFIG_DMADEVICES=y
CONFIG_DW_DMAC_CORE=m
CONFIG_DW_DMAC=m

# aplay -l -L | grep broadwell
Comment by Doug Newgard (Scimmia) - Sunday, 17 April 2016, 19:25 GMT
uncon, this is not an issue on 4.4.5. And that version hasn't been in testing for a long time.
Comment by Parker Reed (parkerlreed) - Sunday, 17 April 2016, 19:37 GMT
tpowa, byt-rt5640 is not fixed in 4.5.1 from testing. dmesg attached.
   dmesg.txt (73.2 KiB)
Comment by Parker Reed (parkerlreed) - Monday, 18 April 2016, 15:39 GMT
So byt-rt5640 needs some UCM files to work on new kernels. https://github.com/plbossart/UCM/tree/master/bytcr-rt5640

Cloning that repo and copying over the files and rebooting works.

EDIT: Device shows up but I spoke too soon. No sound output on headphones (my internal speakers are broken so I can't test those)

Hardware: Dell XPS 13 (model 9343, bios A07): https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dell_XPS_13_(2015) . Sound chipset: Realtek ALC3263. It is still not recognized with kernel 4.5.1-1.

Can confirm: Problem persists on linux-4.5.1-1
Comment by Mads Anderson (jkbowling) - Tuesday, 19 April 2016, 20:40 GMT
I got audio working on kernel 4.5.1 after adding the following options in kernel config file:

CONFIG_DW_DMAC=y
CONFIG_SND_SOC_INTEL_HASWELL_MACH=m
CONFIG_SND_SOC_INTEL_BROADWELL_MACH=m
Comment by Joss Wright (tealeaf) - Tuesday, 19 April 2016, 20:57 GMT
jkbowling: That's exactly the solution. The problem is that it either requires every Arch user to have CONFIG_DW_DMAC=y as part of the kernel distributed with Arch, or alternatively for anyone using affected machines to build their kernel manually.

Ultimately, this seems to be an issue that will have to be resolved at the kernel level.
Comment by Mads Anderson (jkbowling) - Wednesday, 20 April 2016, 09:41 GMT
tealeaf: Is CONFIG_DW_DMAC=y for default big issue (for temp fix)? I think that it's impact on kernel size is minimal (maybe wrong). In the end nobody uses all of the compiled drivers.
Comment by Joss Wright (tealeaf) - Wednesday, 20 April 2016, 09:45 GMT
jkbowling: I don't think it would be much of an added problem for most users, but from reading other threads in other places, such as the Redhat forums, it was seen as an unacceptable way to 'solve' the problem. From a distribution's point of view, without getting changes adopted at the kernel level, it looks like it's the best solution. I also don't know how much it adds to the kernel, but given that it would fix broken sound for these chipsets it seems a good tradeoff to me.

Personally, and I don't know how the default kernel configuration for Arch is decided, I would love to see CONFIG_DW_DMAC=y simply added, as that would resolve the issue as I understand it.
Comment by Dorian Yeager (dalorin) - Thursday, 21 April 2016, 12:25 GMT
I got burned on this also. I'm running a chromebook cb3-531 banjo. Extremely frustrating. I built the kernel three times using the suggestions above and still made no difference. I downgraded all the way to 4.4.4-1 Everything works perfectly after the downgrade. It's hard to believe something like this makes it through. Now I'm afraid to ever run pacman -Syu on any of my boxes.
Comment by PCFreak (pcfreak) - Thursday, 21 April 2016, 17:32 GMT
I can confirm the problem on my Dell XPS 13 (9343). As a workarround I run the LTS kernel now but it has other problems (Freezes when using touchpad sometimes).
One can build the kernel himself or use linux-xps13 from AUR but as others already mentioned devices like soundcards, touchpads etc. have to work out of the box.

Still now working with 4.5.2-1 on Asus Chromebook C200. It uses snd_soc_sst_byt_max98090_mach module which is absent since 4.5.0.
Comment by Mads Anderson (jkbowling) - Friday, 22 April 2016, 17:30 GMT
I wonder if we could revert https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/a92ea59b74e231cc0a969afa8d71fa314d5860f2 and backport CONFIG_SND_SOC_* entries from kernel 4.4 (if needed) to fix all of this until it will be finally resolved upstream (alsa/kernel).
Comment by mattia (nTia89) - Monday, 25 April 2016, 08:24 GMT
IMHO, as dell XPS 13 9343 owner, is to wait 'official' support... OT: as well there are others and more serious problems!

new 4.5.2-1 release seems to try to fix it: https://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit/packages.git/commit/trunk?h=packages/linux&id=2a4c58b5c252a9666fff294b479efc29de8f4acc

Today I gave the linux-ck kernel a try (version 4.5.3-1). Sound does not work. Hardware: Dell XPS 13 model 9343.
Comment by mattia (nTia89) - Thursday, 05 May 2016, 12:27 GMT
Not for me!
Sound works both in linux-ck 4.5.2 and 4.5.3
Please, note that I haven't edited any configuration, so my is a vanilla installation...

first, don't spam butracker with so long messages; use pastebin or similar services
second, use official kernel since could be a linux-ck specific issue... we don't know...!!!
third, do you have a dual-boot with windows?
Comment by Francisco Cribari (cribari) - Thursday, 05 May 2016, 15:48 GMT
Sorry about the long message. No dual boot with Windows, that is, Windows is not installed on this machine.
Comment by mattia (nTia89) - Thursday, 05 May 2016, 15:57 GMT
try with official kernel and explain better the behaviour.
e.g. do you have any kernel parameters? does this issue happen always? does this issue happen always after an hour?
Comment by Francisco Cribari (cribari) - Thursday, 05 May 2016, 16:11 GMT
I am not using extra kernel parameters (besides quiet). The problem happens with kernels 4.4.*, i.e., sound works for a while (from 10 or 20 minutes to a couple of hours) and then stops working. With kernel

cribari@darwin4 ~ $ uname -a
Linux darwin4 4.5.1-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Apr 14 19:19:32 CEST 2016 x86_64 GNU/Linux
cribari@darwin4 ~ $

the soundcard is not even recognized.

cribari@darwin4 ~ $ aplay -l

What I am doing: I am using a linux-custom kernel 4.5.1 which I compiled with

CONFIG_ACPI_REV_OVERRIDE_POSSIBLE=y

Sound works flawless.
Comment by mattia (nTia89) - Thursday, 05 May 2016, 16:23 GMT
try the 4.5.2 kernel in testing repo
output indicates that you are working with a connected monitor... try without it

anyway `CONFIG_ACPI_REV_OVERRIDE_POSSIBLE=y` is the option to force the audio in legacy mode; this information agree with the fact that 4.4+ kernel versions work in I2S mode... this means it is not an issue related to this bug!

do you have any file in `/etc/modprobe.d/` ?
do you have `alsa-lib` installed on your system?
Comment by Francisco Cribari (cribari) - Thursday, 05 May 2016, 16:33 GMT
I don't have a monitor attached to my notebook. In /etc/modprobe.d I have:

cribari@darwin4 /etc/modprobe.d $ ls
alsa-base.conf blacklist-psmouse.conf i915.conf
blacklist-broadcom.conf broadcom-wl-dkms.conf
cribari@darwin4 /etc/modprobe.d $ cat alsa-base.conf
options snd_hda_intel index=1,0
cribari@darwin4 /etc/modprobe.d $

alsa-lib is installed (version 1.1.1-1). lib32-alsa-lib (version 1.1.1-1) is also installed. I also have alsa-firmware (version 1.0.29-1), alsa-plugins (version 1.1.1-1), alsa-tools (version 1.1.0-2).
Comment by mattia (nTia89) - Friday, 06 May 2016, 09:30 GMT
ok, I was wrong by HDMI, sorry
my last idea is to try without alsa-base.conf... simply because is audio related
Comment by Francisco Cribari (cribari) - Friday, 06 May 2016, 12:37 GMT
I gave the linux-ck kernel another try (kernel 4.5.3-1-ck) after removing /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf . Sound worked when I booted the computer. dmesg contains:

[ 26.194909] haswell-pcm-audio haswell-pcm-audio: FW loaded, mailbox readback FW info: type 01, - version: 00.00, build 77, source commit id: 876ac6906f31a43b6772b23c7c983ce9dcb18a19

I started the Google Chrome browser and watched some YouTube videos and streaming radio. After one hour or so sound was gone. At that point:

cribari@darwin4 ~ $ dmesg | tail

* pulseaudio-bluetooth version 8.0-3
* pavucontrol version 3.0-4

The most incredible thing is that we can't reproduce it (at least me)!!!
In order to deeply and accurately solve this issue we have at least to must be able to reproduce the issue!!!

OK, let make a step backward: are we really sharing the same hardware?

My hardware is Dell XPS 13 (model 9342, bios A07). Suggestions of what I might try are greatly appreciated.

Upgraded to linux 4.5.2-1-ARCH
ran 'zcat /proc/config.gz | grep "DW_DMAC_CORE=\|DW_DMAC=\|DMADEVICES="' and output was
CONFIG_DMADEVICES=y
CONFIG_DW_DMAC_CORE=y
CONFIG_DW_DMAC=y

What I read above, CONFIG_DW_DMAC=y is the temp fix, which is now enabled according my config but still no sound. I do now have a "Dummy Output (Pulseaudio mixer) sound card listed which wasn't there before. Staying on LTS kernel until fixed.

Just upgraded to 4.5.2-1-ARCH and sound is back. Two hours in since last reboot and everything seems to be working fine.
I'll report back in case there's any sudden issue, but so far so good :)

[edit] forgot to say, this is my machine:

my model is:
[ 0.000000] DMI: Dell Inc. XPS 13 9343/0TM99H, BIOS A07 11/11/2015

the code after the "9343" may indicate a different hardware revision, that at the end could be the source of problems...
but this is only a supposition of mine.
Comment by KaiSforza (KaiSforza) - Monday, 09 May 2016, 13:37 GMT
I have the same model as mattia:

[ 0.000000] DMI: Dell Inc. XPS 13 9343/0TM99H, BIOS A07 11/11/2015

I have also swapped out my wireless card, and I can see sound cards, but when I do play sound it's got this weird horror-movie-esque static to any sound that's played. This very well could be a problem with the hardware, maybe to do with the wireless card switch, but I would think that with the changes in 4.5.2-1 that sound would play correctly.

Wireless card:

It seems KaiSforza, mattia and me have the same (0TM99H).
Speaking for me I have the i5 1920x1080 version without touch delivered with Ubuntu.

In the future we should provide detailed information about the setup. Maybe someone could hack together some commands which results we should always include to get to the root cause of the issue.

Hardware:

cribari@darwin4 ~ $ dmesg | grep "XPS 13"
[ 0.000000] DMI: Dell Inc. XPS 13 9343/0310JH, BIOS A07 11/11/2015

i.e., 9343 model with Intel i7, touchscreen, 3200 x 1800 screen resolution, Broadcom wireless.

Kernel 4.5.3:

cribari@darwin4 ~ $ uname -a
Linux darwin4 4.5.3-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat May 7 20:43:57 CEST 2016 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I have sound when I boot the computer, but dmesg informs:

alsa-firmware is installed (version 1.0.29-1).

Sound is gone after a while, usually when I play YouTube videos or streaming radio from

http://cbn.globoradio.globo.com/

using Google Chrome or another browser (e.g., Vivaldi). (I mostly use Chrome.) Usually, that happens when I stop the video or streaming radio and try to resume it later. The crashes also happen when I try to record a screencast using SimpleScreenRecorder.

I reported my problems with audio here: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=93361
Comment by PCFreak (pcfreak) - Wednesday, 11 May 2016, 18:40 GMT
just out of curiosity. I do not have alsa-firmware installed, instead I extracted "IntcPP01.bin" from a copy of a Windows Realtek Audio driver (I think it was 9343_Audio_Driver_X22K2_WN32_7422.118.0_A01.EXE) and placed it in /usr/lib/firmware/intel/IntcPP01.bin
I did that a long time ago because I saw that error in dmesg and have (still) crackling sound on headphones (sometimes). But I think this has nothing to do with the sound problem people have with the latest kernels. As far as I remember sound always worked without this firmware and my sound also went away at one of the 4.5 kernels but is now back with 4.5.3.1 (i5 1920x1080 no touch).
So the firmware seems maybe not to be the problem.

Hi there! Just wanted to jump in and second Francisco Cribari, we have the same stats (i7 5600u, 3200x1800, touch), even though a different DMI:

DMI: Dell Inc. XPS 13 9343/0F5KF3, BIOS A07 11/11/2015

But like him, I cannot get sound on any kernel (for some time now, including and up to 4.5.3-1, my current kernel), UNLESS (the DMAC_CORE options have no effect) the kernel is recompiled with:

CONFIG_ACPI_REV_OVERRIDE_POSSIBLE=y

Which, as u all know, causes:

[ 0.000000] ACPI: DMI detected: DELL XPS 13 (2015) (force ACPI _REV to 5)

But which allows me to get sound!!! For a little bit at least. Like Francisco, sound works for a bit (playing thru Audacious, VLC), but around the time I try watching web clips, maybe with pausing or resuming, sound stops working again, with the message:

kernel: haswell-pcm-audio haswell-pcm-audio: ipc: --message timeout-- ipcx 0x83000000 isr 0x00000000 ipcd 0x00000000 imrx 0x7fff0000
kernel: haswell-pcm-audio haswell-pcm-audio: error: stream commit failed
kernel: haswell-pcm-audio haswell-pcm-audio: ASoC: haswell-pcm-audio hw params failed: -110

since different, even if only slightly different, hardware makes difference (sorry for the pun)
we first have to better understand more about the code after the "9343"

@Willy Were you able to get (I2S) sound to work?

@mattia Is there any extra information I can provide?

Comment by Francisco Cribari (cribari) - Tuesday, 31 May 2016, 16:18 GMT
I have the feeling that somehow that crashes that @Willy and I experiencing are related to gdm. @Willy Are you using gdm as well?
Comment by Willy (abrb_water) - Tuesday, 31 May 2016, 16:33 GMT
@Francisco

I am still not able to get I2S to work. The only way I can get sound is by compiling in the ACPI Override, and even that is quite buggy and unreliable (4.5.3-1).

I am also using gdm.
Comment by Francisco Cribari (cribari) - Tuesday, 31 May 2016, 16:37 GMT
@Willy Me too. I believe there are some issues with gdm and pulseaudio and they may be playing a role here. I switched to LightDM and was able to get I2S sound. The problem for me was that with Gnome 3.20 + LightDM I was unable to lock the screen and the screensaver no longer worked. That's why I returned to gdm. It would be nice if could give LightDM a try.
Comment by Willy (abrb_water) - Tuesday, 31 May 2016, 16:43 GMT
@Francisco Turns out you were on to something! I rebooted into the repo kernel (4.5.4), logged into Gnome 3.20 with lightdm, and my sound is currently working. It looks like it may actually be an issue with gdm
Comment by Francisco Cribari (cribari) - Tuesday, 31 May 2016, 16:46 GMT
@Willy 1) Yes, I believe it is an issue with gdm. 2) How and where it can be reported? 3) Were you able to lock the screen and get the screensaver to work with LightDM? If so, how? The packages I installed: lightdm and lightdm-webkit2-greeter.
Comment by Francisco Cribari (cribari) - Wednesday, 01 June 2016, 15:48 GMT
I believe the crashes that I described above are caused by gdm, as I have already explained. Is there anything that can be done to prevent such crashes short of disabling gdm? gdm starts an instance of pulseaudio. I followed the suggestion here:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bluetooth_headset#Gnome_with_GDM

That is, created /var/lib/gdm/.config/pulse/client.conf (I did not have this file) with

autospawn = no
daemon-binary = /bin/true

and

sudo -ugdm mkdir -p /var/lib/gdm/.config/systemd/user
sudo -ugdm ln -s /dev/null /var/lib/gdm/.config/systemd/user/pulseaudio.socket

I rebooted the computer and there was no longer a pulseaudio process for gdm. Nonetheless, the crashes (with I2S sound) persist.

We should be able to kill pulseaudio and to manually restart it, as described here:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio/Examples#Disabling_automatic_spawning_of_PulseAudio_server

However, that does not work for me. After a

$ pulseaudio --kill

pulseaudio is restarted:

I have a 9343 model (no-touchscreen, i5, broadcom) with gnome and gdm as well.
For installing pulseaudio I haven't done anything particular, so it should works out-the-box.
My suggestion is to start from a clean Arch installation...
Comment by Willy (abrb_water) - Wednesday, 01 June 2016, 16:39 GMT
@mattia the problem has persisted even after starting from clean Arch (even Fedora) installations. You may not be experiencing the issue because it is limited to certain configurations of the XPS 9343. Francisco and I both have the i7 touch version, though different DMIs, and we suffer the same issue. It seems to be a problem with gdm and pulseaudio and the driver in i2s mode. Using other DMs fixes it. In some cases I have had sound go out after resuming from suspend (after changing dm)
Comment by Francisco Cribari (cribari) - Wednesday, 01 June 2016, 22:14 GMT
@mattia I had exactly the same problem with Fedora. So, I don't think there is anything wrong with my install. For some reason, this particular bug only affects some 9343 machines (my guess: Intel i7, touchscreen) that run gdm. A colleague of mine that with the same notebook (and the same configuration) was having the same problem with Fedora + gdm. Last week he installed Arch + Cinnamon + LightDM and now his I2S audio works flawless. The bug affects a small number of people (perhaps), but it is still a bug. Considerable progress was made when the source of the problem was identified: gdm. We are dutifully reporting the bug. Is there any chance that it can be fixed? Is there hope?
Comment by Dean Wallace (duffydack) - Wednesday, 01 June 2016, 22:21 GMT
Using latest kernel I still don't have any sound and I'm not using gdm nor any other. Lts is fine but 4.5 fails to detect card properly.
Comment by piernov (piernov) - Friday, 03 June 2016, 01:53 GMT
It seems there are a bunch of different bugs affecting Intel's ASoC. This one was originally about sound card not recognized at all because the module was not compiled in newer (>=4.5.0) kernels. Even though it is fixed for most of the ASoC, it's still not working with MAX98090 on Bay Trail because the module (snd_soc_sst_byt_max98090_mach) is still absent.
I think people encountering other problems (ie. sound card detected but not working correctly) should open a new issue.
Comment by Dean Wallace (duffydack) - Friday, 03 June 2016, 10:27 GMT
As @piernov explains above, I am one of those max98090 sufferers. LTS kernel works fine but is getting closer in version number to 4.5 and I'm concerned that with the 4.5.x kernel not being fixed for this issue, I'll soon have no sound.
Comment by Francisco Cribari (cribari) - Friday, 03 June 2016, 12:47 GMT
Following the suggestion made by @piernov I filed a new bug report: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/49556 . @Willy Could you please share your experience in that bug report?
Comment by mattia (nTia89) - Friday, 03 June 2016, 14:11 GMT
today I experienced a strange and quite similar to yours problem: no audio!

dmesg output contains these new lines:
[ 2.294449] rt286 i2c-INT343A:00: I2C error -121
[ 2.303486] rt286: probe of i2c-INT343A:00 failed with error -121
[ 3.268581] broadwell-audio broadwell-audio: ASoC: CODEC DAI rt286-aif1 not registered

this issue happens randomly, or better, the only different thing made by me was booting a live media (via USB) of Kali Linux

the issue was fixed by to cold boot
Comment by mattia (nTia89) - Tuesday, 07 June 2016, 17:51 GMT
just a little update:
this weird behaviour has just happened and seem because I switched ON the microphone (from the gnome control center);
(this could explain the reason why it happened... e.g. Kali Linux turn it on at boot...)
so I power it off, power it on, power off and power on to restore a `normal` situation
NB: the first reboot dmesg provides a different message: simply this

[ 2.222191] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1b.0: no codecs found!

This is still an issue with byt_max98090 not being detected since 4.5 right up to now 4.6. I'm a little worried now LTS (which gives me sound) is going to break as it gets closer to a 4.5 release.
Comment by Francisco Cribari (cribari) - Wednesday, 08 June 2016, 23:31 GMT
I was hoping that kernel 4.6 would solve the problems that affect I2S audio in Dell XPS 13 9343 machines. The problems, nonetheless, remain. I realize that there are different problems at play (card not recognized, audio crashes etc.). I have been struggling with audio crashes since kernel 4.4 was released (I ran Fedora at that time). I am sure the developers are trying hard to solve this mess, but it would be useful if they could share some information with us. Is it likely that the problems will be solved in the 4.6 kernel series? Finally, is there additional information that we (users) can provide to help the developers?
Comment by Francisco Cribari (cribari) - Friday, 10 June 2016, 17:56 GMT
The problem (I2S audio crashes) remains with kernel 4.6.2. A dmesg dump is available at http://pastebin.com/D3iyt0GA . It seems that the crash happens at this point:

[ 5193.181346] haswell-pcm-audio haswell-pcm-audio: error: audio DSP boot timeout IPCD 0x0 IPCX 0x0
Comment by Francisco Cribari (cribari) - Saturday, 25 June 2016, 23:25 GMT
The problem may not be caused by GDM after all. I am now running KDE + SDDM and the I2S audio crashes keep happening.

@Willy Are you still experiencing the audio crashes?

Comment by Dean Wallace (duffydack) - Tuesday, 28 June 2016, 08:51 GMT
Kernel 4.6.3, same old same old. No sound card, other than dummy, is detected. LTS 4.4 thankfully works, so I'll have to keep that. Is it just a matter of compiling the module for it if it was removed? I see that 4.4 has
/usr/lib/modules/4.4.14-1-lts/kernel/sound/soc/intel/boards/snd-soc-sst-byt-max98090-mach.ko.gz
/usr/lib/modules/4.4.14-1-lts/kernel/sound/soc/intel/boards/snd-soc-sst-cht-bsw-max98090_ti.ko.gz
but 4.6.3 has only /usr/lib/modules/4.6.3-1-ARCH/kernel/sound/soc/intel/boards/snd-soc-sst-cht-bsw-max98090_ti.ko.gz
I'm guessing the 'mach' version of the module is required for my particular baytrail sound chip...
Comment by Francisco Cribari (cribari) - Tuesday, 28 June 2016, 15:21 GMT
The problem (I2S audio crashes) remains with pulseaudio version 9.0-1 + kernel 4.6.3-1.

Comment by piernov (piernov) - Friday, 26 August 2016, 14:33 GMT
I didn't try it yet, but I had another issue (on Linux 4.6 at least) which does not look related to this change. Sadly I did not save the log but it was something like "could not get gpio -1" then the byt_max98090 driver saying the hardware could not be initialized.
Comment by Jeremy M. (jskier) - Thursday, 01 September 2016, 20:14 GMT
As noted on github for script to fix sound on Toshiba Chromebook2, a user reports that the audio (firmware??) was removed in 4.5. I still see the module in linux git though.

https://github.com/fascinatingcaptain/CBFixesAndTweaks/issues/1

In the meantime, linux-lts works for me on my Toshiba Chromebook; any kernel above and it borks built-in audio.
Comment by Anthony O'Brien (obrienanthonyt) - Wednesday, 19 October 2016, 04:43 GMT
I fixed mine (similar problem, different hardware) by blacklisting the conflicting audio module,
in your case byt-max98090, in your modprobe.conf file and than rebuilding the mkinitcpio image.
Edit: I am on Kernel 4.8.10-1

Comment by piernov (piernov) - Wednesday, 28 December 2016, 12:55 GMT
I switched to GalliumOS on my Asus C200 and it's working with the 4.7.5 kernel. You must however use BOOT_STUB rather than RW_LEGACY, see https://github.com/GalliumOS/galliumos-distro/issues/180 . You can try to use their kernel on ArchLinux, maybe it works.

I tried building my own ArchLinux kernel to get back the snd-soc-sst-byt-max98090-mach module. I've successfully built it but I was getting various errors and the sound wasn't working (even after switching back to BOOT_STUB) though.
I also tried Ubuntu and the sound wasn't working either.
Comment by Anthony O'Brien (obrienanthonyt) - Wednesday, 28 December 2016, 17:20 GMT
@piernov Have you looked at what alsa is trying to use as your sound device?
Comment by Willy (abrb_water) - Wednesday, 28 December 2016, 20:01 GMT
@dalorin for me, the problem has persisted on all versions of the kernel since 4.3, up to 4.8.13-1-ARCH which i am on now. The old trick for using another dm besides gdm no longer seems to work. Also no success on Ubuntu, Debian, or Fedora. I will try GalliumOS like @piernov suggested today and see if I have any luck. Btw I have the Dell XPS 13 9343 (2015), with broadwell audio controller.
Comment by piernov (piernov) - Wednesday, 28 December 2016, 20:17 GMT
@obrienanthonyt on 4.4, I've got both the byt-max98090 audio codec and the Intel HDMI audio codec available in ALSA. On 4.5 and later, only the Intel HDMI is available.

@abrb_water this bug report is about missing/buggy kernel modules since Linux 4.5. Your should take a look at https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/49556 instead since your issue looks similar.
Comment by Anthony O'Brien (obrienanthonyt) - Wednesday, 28 December 2016, 20:20 GMT
@piernov Have you tried to blacklist the intel hdmi audio codec?
Comment by PCFreak (pcfreak) - Monday, 02 January 2017, 23:04 GMT
Users that own a Dell XPS 13 and run into the problem of only having HDMI sound should try to run the Audio-Test from within the BIOS diagnostics once. This brought back audio for me many times and I have working audio on Arch Linux with kernel 4.8.13-1-ARCH. I can sometimes/often force the sound card to be missing when suspending my computer and then the only way to get it back is to do the "soundtest-trick" but it brings back sound reliably.
See http://www.windowscentral.com/dell-xps-13-audio-problems-heres-fix#test (Start with point 4 when you are on Linux of course)

Updated to 4.9.6 with same results as with 4.5+. No byt-max98090 sound card, only HDMI. Gonna have to hold back kernel updates from now on I think. Stick to 4.4 LTS.

There is apparently a fix for this now. See https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=187591 - the last few comments. Means compiling the kernel with every other driver disabled, so, maybe someone can make an AUR pkg out of it.
Comment by Dean Wallace (duffydack) - Sunday, 05 February 2017, 11:40 GMT

@duffydack I would be glad to try it if you can provide me your PKGBUILD.

@piernov Nice one. I just noticed I never saved the config properly when removing all the other sound drivers (kernel n00b). Not a great deal of difference, might shave compile time a few mins. Also, I wasn't sure whether to disable a lot more stuff that's not relevant, but I decided to keep it as close to the arch kernel as possible, which I used.
Think this will ever be fixed in main? Hope so. Anyway, 1 more compile just to be sure, then I'll put on AUR.

@duffydack works perfectly, thanks. :)
Well, the driver is still as buggy/unstable as before but at least the sound is working again.

Btw "Left Speaker Mixer Left DAC" and "Right Speaker Mixer Right DAC" have to be enabled in alsamixer to actually get an output on the speakers.
Comment by Dean Wallace (duffydack) - Tuesday, 07 February 2017, 19:36 GMT
@piernov, Just checked, they are already set on mine, not by me, must have been set in the asound.state I'm using, maybe.
I've just trimmed down the kernel of all the gpu drivers, non intel stuff, and other junk I don't need on my chromebook, shaved a good 20mb. I'll keep the AUR pkg as-is, but if you want the config for yourself....
Comment by mattia (nTia89) - Wednesday, 08 February 2017, 17:13 GMT
Now, that I have upgraded to 4.9 series, I noticed a huge increase of boot time (`systemd-analyze`, kernel goes from 0.9s to 2.1s...).
Did you noticed it too?
Comment by Dean Wallace (duffydack) - Wednesday, 08 February 2017, 18:52 GMT
@nTia89 Yes I did too. Shutdown time also. Have you tried 4.9 from arch core? I'll try it later, it should be the same since I'm using abs to build, just with the tiny patch that changes 2 lines for sound.

Just a fyi. I compiled with Takashi Iwai's legacy patch, installed ok, added the kernel boot line snd-soc-sst-dsp.bind_legacy=1, rebooted, same old same old. Only hdmi detected, and "Dummy output" for alsa.
/sigh
Comment by Dean Wallace (duffydack) - Tuesday, 02 May 2017, 19:17 GMT
Oh dear Oh dear. Looks like I might have to start using 4.9LTS for my patched build. Just grabbed 4.11 from testing and it built and patched fine, just like the previous 4.9+ kernels, and loads the byt-max98090 module and shows my sound card, just as it should. 1 problem, there is NO sound. Using the same asound.state file, checked alsamixer levels, still silence.

Comment by Dean Wallace (duffydack) - Sunday, 15 October 2017, 09:06 GMT
@nTia89 I'm afriad so. The patches that fixed regressions were finally merged into 4.13, but, the kernel still needs compiling with the newer byt/cht drivers disabled before the old one can be built. I've recently been made aware that compiling the kernel (stock ARCH config) with just the relevant drivers disabled to build the old baytrail driver (no other modifications), there is no sound output. The card is detected same as before, sound 'looks' like being output, but there is no audible output. My kernel config is a heavily stripped down ARCH default config that I've carried over from 4.9 right up to 4.13 and sound works fine. I've diff'd the arch config with my stripped custom config, and I cannot see what it is that's making mine work and not a stock (with driver enabled) kernel. If i start off with a make localmodconfig (which sets sound config up correctly) and I enable everything else I need, sound works fine. Wish I could nail it down.

@nTia89 Just tested a 4.14rc4 build, default config with sound drivers disabled to make byt-max98090 sound work. This time sound is working fine. Don't know what gives with 4.13.

Well, I guess you could try bisecting to see which commit made it start acting nicely. Then ask for a backport.
Comment by Dean Wallace (duffydack) - Sunday, 15 October 2017, 17:16 GMT
'Nicely' is a bit of an exaggeration :). The whole thing is FUBAR really. Still relies on an obsolete driver that needs force enabling, and then there's the whole duplex "daleks singing" effect when switching to headset/mic with stereo input+output enabled in PA. I'd like a complete fix, but I'm happy to carry on compiling (it's a tiny config now).
Cheers

I noticed 4.1 EOL was extended out to May, 2018 recently, for those able and willing to go back a bit with LTS. The mic seems to work most of the time as well. I have this LTS branch along with the CK patchset in AUR.

Nice touch Dean on the boot up logo with your packages ;-)
Comment by Dean Wallace (duffydack) - Sunday, 15 October 2017, 20:13 GMT
lol... it's how I feel about the devs that dropped us in this mess in the first place.
If I used a mic I'd get https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss/257-7842757-8663011?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=TROND+AC2+Aluminum+USB+Audio+Adapter

The mic does work once you stop the 'daleks', it just means switching pulseaudio profiles a few times before it finally 'locks' and stops being garbled.
Nice to know 4.1 is still alive and works. I'll add it to my AUR info.

As far as my chromebook's byt-max98090 goes, this is no longer an issue in linux 4.15. One thing to note however, to get sound working initially I had to use the chtmax98090 UCM from https://github.com/plbossart/UCM. Can be removed when sound is verified, it keeps working without it, (I guess the asound.state handles it). It is actually better without it because of the way mixers are oddly handled. /shrug

I can confirm that now, with kernel 4.16.11, on a https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Acer_CB3-131_Chromebook, Totem and Audacity and even Youtube all work fine once you install plbossart's UCM files, as (currently) explained on the wiki:

$ git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/plbossart/UCM.git
$ cd UCM
$ sudo cp -r chtmax98090/ /usr/share/alsa/ucm/
$ alsaucm -c chtmax98090 set _verb HiFi set _enadev Speakers
$ sudo alsactl store
$ # and then restart any apps using sound

Headphone/speaker switching works too, without any further command line intervention.

The Linux-lts44 kernel and modules
2 archlinuxcn/linux-lts44-headers 4.4.148-1 [installed]

@duffydack
how did you used https://github.com/plbossart/UCM
I tried @kousu 's method on my chromebook's byt-max98090, it did not work.
Comment by Dean Wallace (duffydack) - Sunday, 30 September 2018, 19:43 GMT
@xieyuheng Since the switch in kernel from byt to cht I've not needed to use UCM files, though I have used them in previous kernel versions. Should be noted that if you need to use them to get sound, you don't /NEED/ them after that, you should still have sound. Anyway, here's my asound.state file, should give you sound, copy it to /var/lib/alsa/

Thank you Sir!
You saved me again.
(I used your linux-max98090 long time ago)
I almost give up.
I am still on archlinuxcn/linux-lts44,
but I have sound now.
Thanks.

I have noticed that linux 4.18.15 and 4.18.16 (Arch pkgs) have broken sound. 4.18.14-arch1-1-ARCH is the last working version. I have rolled back the recent alsa pkg updates to rule them out and it's not them. Anyone else?
Comment by Jeremy M. (jskier) - Tuesday, 23 October 2018, 18:40 GMT
@duffydack, I'm on 4.18.16 and it still works for me.

@jskier, well damn, something has changed. What is your setup?
Comment by Kei van Grol (VGrol) - Wednesday, 24 October 2018, 08:35 GMT
@duffydack I'm in the same boat, as of ~2 days ago.
Rolled back Pulseaudio and the associated dependencies, but alas, this did not resolve the problem.
Comment by Dean Wallace (duffydack) - Wednesday, 24 October 2018, 11:45 GMT
@VGol: it's the kernel, I'll look into it AGAIN (ffs) when I have time. I'm ready to throw this baytrash in the trash though.
I'd like to know how @jskier has working sound tho. configs plz!

Picture or it didn't happen:

What configs do you want? UCM? I'm using the standard kernel package.

Still using the Toshiba Swanky Chromebook, flashed bios / no ChromeOS, boots to USB3. Anyway, I'm not sure why you guys are having issues and I'm not. A lot of folks gave up before the fix to USB audio dongles.

Also, it isn't 100% great all the time (never has been, even on the older kernels). Sometimes sound gets choppy when I open pavucontrol or switching between headphones. It's a quirky beast.
Comment by Dean Wallace (duffydack) - Wednesday, 24 October 2018, 16:52 GMT
@jskier: Yeah, I have volume meters moving too, just no audible sound. Card is there, module loaded, all is the same as before, just no actual sound output. what firmware, seabios or uefi?
what UCM are you using (I'm not, but I've tried them), and paste your asound.state please.
I'm currently investigating what commit messed it up.
Comment by Jeremy M. (jskier) - Wednesday, 24 October 2018, 17:39 GMT
Using Seabios and plbossart UCM files (noted above).

Well, now I'm in a pickle, I booted up to grab this and no sound (mixer says there is). Before powering down yesterday, I switched over to Bluetooth audio speaker for a little bit and then shutdown. Outputs are correct. Only other difference is I was plugged into AC for most of the day yesterday. I'll try the older kernel.

To clarify, no sound through speakers or headphones.
Comment by Dean Wallace (duffydack) - Wednesday, 24 October 2018, 17:50 GMT
@jskier: oh so you're still on RW legacy? Hmmm, this is first trouble I've had on uefi. The UCM files, I don't use them because I don't like the way mixers are handled.
Comment by Jeremy M. (jskier) - Wednesday, 24 October 2018, 18:07 GMT
@duffydack, that was well over a year ago I popped the write tab and removed ChromeOS. I just checked, it's on uefi full, sorry.
Comment by Dean Wallace (duffydack) - Wednesday, 24 October 2018, 18:34 GMT
So you're on UEFI and have sound working from builtin audio? What version of UEFI is it? I found a bug in latest available from MrChromebox, making my cpu idle @ 70c!, which I notified him about, and reverted back to one I was using (2018.02.04) and back to normal temps.

Well I found the commit that broke sound, reverted it, tested, sound is working. Now, here we go again with this shit. I don't wanna maintain a kernel again. I'll file a regression bug and see what happens.
Comment by Jeremy M. (jskier) - Wednesday, 24 October 2018, 18:53 GMT
Sorry for the confusion, booting up today on 4.18.16 and sound doesn't work despite drivers being present. Going back to 4.18.14 and it works. Please post the upstream regression bug details when it is in.

I'm using FW from early 2017 (I don't use the Chromebook very often). Thank you for the heads up on the heat issue with the latest version, was mulling updating it but will hold at the previous version for now. Anyway, that should rule out this being the issue.

I had the joy of dealing with the Arch mkinitcpio USB boot issue recently on the Chromebook. I noticed several older files present (that should not have been) on the downgrade from 4.18.16. Could somehow be related to 4.18.16 working for me yesterday but not today. Not sure exactly why this happened; perhaps a perfect storm of luks+f2fs, cheap USB3 drive, and the previous mkinitcpio issue.

I've not filed on bugzilla yet, I've mailed the relevant maintainers direct first, hope it gets taken notice of, instead of being lost in the bugzilla swamp.
Here's the patch if you wanna build your own https://ptpb.pw/tvqV
I'll keep this page updated

Comment by Jeremy M. (jskier) - Sunday, 28 October 2018, 18:11 GMT
@duffydack, thank you so much for your work on this. If it doesn't get any traction, I'm willing to fire up a package in AUR again (or co-maintain it) if you'd like. I don't have a lot of spare time, but I do still use the Chromebook once and awhile, and want to see it supported.
Comment by Dean Wallace (duffydack) - Monday, 29 October 2018, 11:07 GMT
@jskier: That's fine, I don't really want to do the whole AUR thing again, but I guess I would if no-one else did. So would you host a repo for binaries?
I've had a response from and supplied logs to a redhat guy (the author of the patch/commit that caused regression) but not heard anything else as yet. I have a feeling this won't be fixed very quickly, going from past experience.
Comment by Jeremy M. (jskier) - Monday, 29 October 2018, 13:24 GMT
Yeah, whatever you got what would be helpful (we've e-mailed each other before, just sent you a quick message). Github for me is jskier21, once I get it working I'll put it up on GH. Working on testing the patch shortly here. On second thought, I'll post the binaries to github first. Compiling now.

Tested and sound works with 4.19 and patch duffydack posted. Initial push, I will do some cleanup on it this week and get it in AUR as well.
Comment by Dean Wallace (duffydack) - Tuesday, 30 October 2018, 10:23 GMT
I wonder if the newer coreboot firmware (the buggy temps one) would help with sound, as this bug is related to the audio mclk which is set by firmware. anyway, there seems to be some chatter and a few patches to test soon.

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/broonie/sound.git/log/?h=for-4.20
It can be queued for 4.19.Y once the commit has been applied to the mainline tree.
You could open a new bug report on the arch bug tracker asking hetfig to apply the commit to the arch linux package until that happens.
Comment by Dean Wallace (duffydack) - Monday, 05 November 2018, 18:55 GMT
I'll stick to main linux releases for now, unless I have reason to use 4.19/LTS in future, if that happens I'll request it.
Comment by Dean Wallace (duffydack) - Sunday, 11 November 2018, 12:28 GMT
I was unaware of the ins and outs, but it seems patches get backported to stable kernels once they hit Linus' tree. The patch is in:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/broonie/sound.git/log/?h=for-linus

So it should get sent over to Linus soon-ish, once it is in Linus tree it will automatically get added to the next stable kernels as its commit message has a:

Cc: stable@vger.kernel.org

in it.

LTS here we come.
