Resuming playback from where it was last stopped (introduced in version 2.2) is broken in VLC 2.2.2. It has been fixed upstream in the 2.2.3 nightly builds. However, especially given VLC's not-so-regular release schedule, IMO this is a feature useful enough to warrant patching.

Steps to reproduce:
Open a media file with VLC through a file manager or the terminal, go to any timepoint, close VLC and reopen the file. A bar should appear at the top with the option to continue playback where left off, but it doesn't happen.

I should probably add that this bug also breaks the (arguably more essential?) "open recent media" function, and that it was discussed in this VLC forum thread:
