My fonts in emacs look messed up after upgrading fontconfig to 2.11.94-1. If I downgrade fontconfig to the version in extra they return to normal.

At the moment emacs is the only application I found which suffers from the problem, but I'm not exactly sure what fontconfig does, and whether it's used by just a few applications.

My impression is that fontconfig ignores some font configuration settings, like hinting, antialiasing etc. I have ~/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf and /etc/fonts/local.conf with some settings, but unfortunately I only have a very vague understanding of font configuration so I can't properly debug the issue.

"messed up" doesn't tell us much.

Not sure if it helps, but did you try "fc-cache -fv"?

Screenshot with both versions of fontconfig attached. Upper one is 2.11.1-2, lower one is 2.11.94-1.

"fc-cache -fv" does not help.

So "messed up" means a minor increase in font weight?

No, I didn't actually notice any increase in font size. I think the font is not as "round" (no antialising?). But you can judge for yourself from the screen shots.

Do you use upstream settings or a local custom configuration that might need some tweaks again? You may also try latest git commits that again changes default aliasing.

I have tried latest git commit (fontconfig-git from AUR) and it didn't make any difference. I have attached my ~/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf and /etc/fonts/local.conf. I don't think I have any other modified files.

I see no "bug" but maybe a different and by upstream wanted behavior. You may want to ask on the fontconfig mailing list
if this is an intended change or a bug. Make sure you use the same hinting style.

I played around with my configs today, I wiped my /etc/fonts/conf.d folder and reinstalled fontconfig which restored the default set of symlinks. I also removed my configuration files and reassembled them part by part. Anyway, I managed to get antialiased well looking fonts in emacs. I need to use a different font than before though... Anyway - this is certainly not an Arch bug, although it'd be nice to get to the bottom of this so that people could be told how to transition their configs / fonts...
