DetailsI recompiled lirc from ABS with the appropriately modified _kernelver variable to no avail. It's almost like it's compiled for another kernel... but it isn't. I'm really stumped on where to go on this one.

check your dmesg output, guess you compiled lirc with a different compiler than kernel26 2.6.17 was compiled with.

Argh. I didn't even think to check that. I just assumed kernels would be compiled with the stable gcc. Yes, that fixed it. Sorry for the alarm!
