I hate to say it but the separate totem-plugin package is simply not working at all... Why not just build the Totem packages with plugin support and leave it at that? I know it's nicer in theory to have a separate package for the plugin, but as I said, that isn't working, and if you've got VLC or MPlayer installed you're probably not going to bother with Totem.

Additional comments about closing:  Totem-plugin has been split because you don't want to have it installed all the time together with totem. Search the bugtracker for further details.
