Recent versions of opensmtp does not include support for backend "db" for tables. The option "--enable-table-db" has to be passed explicitly to configure at build time.

Currently if a "db" table is used int the configuration:

table secrets db:/etc/smtpd/secrets.db
[...]

opensmtpd fails with error:

# smtpd -vn
fatal: table_create: backend "db" does not exist

Reason for closing:  Won't implement
Additional comments about closing:  This does not seem to be too popular. If you need that feature, you can rebuild the package, e.g. using ABS.
