DetailsI tried to install Arch in my laptop, a Compaq Presario 915us (AthlonXP 1800+ - ATI shared memory VGA - ALi M5229 IDE Controller).
First I tried booting the default kernel off the installation CD but it stopped with a "Kernel Panic" message. Then I tried the "arch-noscsi" option and it seemed to work but I couldn't read the modules from the CD-ROM or even partition the hard disk. I downloaded and tried the 0.71 installation CD but the exact same thing happened. While trying to figure out what was wrong, I tried installing Ubuntu 5.4 and then Suse 10 (I had the CDs lying around) and they both worked flawlesly. Finaly, I got it to work by making a custom installation CD by replacing the "vmlinuz" kernel file of the 0.72 installation CD with the one of the Archie Live CD. So, it seems to me that the kernel of the installation CD is missing something that causes some systems not to boot correctly (not sure of what, though). Maybe you would like to look into it when you bring out Arch Linux 0.8. Thank you in advance, george |

Thank you!
great to hear that you now can use archlinux, also kernel updates might fix this problems in the future, so you need to try on new kernel versions if you can remove the option again.
