Audacity 2.1.1 works fine for me. Eric, do you see the same problem as reported by Max?

to Max:
- Check 'coredumpctl' output if there are any crashes from audacity
- Provide output of 'strace -f audacity'
Comment by Max Sydorenko (SydMax) - Wednesday, 25 November 2015, 08:35 GMT
No coredumps related to audacity.
Output of the strace is attached in the file.
Comment by Max Sydorenko (SydMax) - Wednesday, 25 November 2015, 08:40 GMT
Compressed strace attached.

I can confirm that audacity doesn't start with the following message:

Warning: Mismatch between the program and library build versions detected.
The library used 2.8 (no debug,Unicode,compiler with C++ ABI 1008,wx containers,compatible with 2.6),
and your program used 2.8 (no debug,Unicode,compiler with C++ ABI 1009,wx containers,compatible with 2.6).

This message is not relevant to the problem, I suppose. Older versions (which work fine) also produce this message.
Comment by fzap (fzap) - Wednesday, 25 November 2015, 22:05 GMT
@Max I agree, dowgrading to 2.1.0 shows the same message & audacity starts correctly.

Googled and found some Ubuntu users have similar problem.

Try deleting ~/.audacity-data and ~/.audacity-files and see if it fixes the issue http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2015/07/ppa-for-audacity-2-1-1-ubuntu-15-10/#comment-3414830

Thanks for confirming it. This definitely sounds like an upstream issue. Please file an upstream bug for it.
