Basically, the current version of fontconfig causes light and medium hinting settings to blur and distort fonts to the point of unreadability; enabling full hinting will get rid of these effects, but not everyone would want full hinting - in some cases it also distorts things. Interestingly, the effect on fonts with light or medium hinting enabled is *exactly* the same as that produced by the autohinter, in both the current version and previous ones. |

http://www.freetype.org/freetype2/patches/rogue-patches.html
The one we want is probably for fontconfig.
So I think this won't help.
