Basically, the current version of fontconfig causes light and medium hinting settings to blur and distort fonts to the point of unreadability; enabling full hinting will get rid of these effects, but not everyone would want full hinting - in some cases it also distorts things.

Interestingly, the effect on fonts with light or medium hinting enabled is *exactly* the same as that produced by the autohinter, in both the current version and previous ones.

Okay there is a fix for this, thanks very much to Test1000... See here:

The one we want is probably for fontconfig.

As far as I can see this patch is already applied to the current fontconfig (added 19/05/06)
So I think this won't help.

Right you are... I wonder what the bloody hell happened that screwed up the autohinter so badly. It's supposed to be *better* in this version!

That looks about right for what you see when enabling subpixel AA, though it's kind of hard to tell on a CRT monitor.

Okay JGC closed the report I posted on the BCI and redirected me here, so I might as well mention it here... The bytecode interpreter still can't be activated, even if you explicitly disable the autohinter in /etc/fonts/conf.d or /etc/fonts/local.conf, in spite of the patch to reenable it (which definitely ought to work).
