Patch to update to 1.4.2. This makes it works with the freetype2.

The libxfont version you found is from a very old modularization project dating from early 2005. The version upgrade is actually a downgrade, the last commit in their changelog for that 1.4.2 version is from 2004. Looks like they didn't have freetype2 support back those days.
