When gnome-packagekit is not installed gnome-software behaves very poorly. You can't search for packages and there is limited capabilities for viewing software that you do have installed. Once gnome-packagekit is installed you can use gnome-software as it is supposed to work.

gnome-software 3.18.3-1
gnome-packagekit 3.18.0-1

I tried installing gnome-software-3.20.3-1 which pulled in packagekit-1.1.1-3 as a dependency (I checked and I do not have "gnome-packagekit" installed). I then ran gnome-software and was able to look around, browse different categories, read reviews and even installing an app and then clicking "Launch" inside gnome-software worked as well as the "Remove" function. Can you please elaborate on what capabilities are missing?

I just checked and in my new install I don't have gnome-packagekit either. I guess this has changed since I posted.
