Description:

SMTP sending is stuck at "Connecting to: some.smtp.host..." and no network connection is opened. This happened after upgrading to thunderbird 38.3.0-2 from thunderbird 38.3.0-1 (so it worked fine in the previous build of the same version).

as far as I can see the rebuild was done due to the icu version bump (to icu 56.1-1).

dunno if icu has anything to do with the issue, or it's just a botched rebuild, but please check it out...

Additional info:
package versions:
icu 56.1-1
thunderbird 38.3.0-2
thunderbird-i18n-en-us 38.3.0-1
thunderbird-i18n-hu 38.3.0-1

Steps to reproduce:
1) compose message
2) send (via SMTP)

(the "Connecting to ..." dialog appears, but no connection gets opened and it's stuck there forever)

Perhaps your SMTP server is temporarily unavailable? I'm unable to repro with Google's and Arch Linux's SMTP servers.

I can connect with telnet just fine. When I try the sending from thunderbird, there's no connection attempt at all (monitored with wireshark).

What is the SMTP server configured in Thunderbird (hostname and port)?

Any errors printed to the terminal if you run Thunderbird from there? Also test with a new profile to make sure the issue isn't caused by an installed extension.

I recreated my profile from scratch, and the issue went away... Simply disabling all addons didnt't help, had to create a completely new profile (after deleting .thunderbird). Reinstalled all previous addons, still works. Don't know what broke with the previous profile, but the same happened to a colleague after the update.

It would be interesting to know if the issue reappears if you set up your profile + addons using thunderbird 38.3.0-1 + icu 55.1-1 and then upgrade to the current versions. In any case, sharing the list of your addons might be useful.

Sorry, I don't have time now to experiment with the rollback / upgrade test, I already spent half a day restoring my settings... For the record, I use these addons:
- https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/lightning/
- https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/gmailui/
- https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/firetray/
- https://github.com/Ericsson/exchangecalendar/wiki/Exchange-EWS-Provider

but disabling all of them didn't solve the issue on the "borked" install.
