the latest vlc in current (vlc 0.8.5-2) does not output video no matter what I set the output to. It seems to no matter what default to no video track. When forcing vlc to use X11 output via command line I get the following:

[althalus@XW ~]$ vlc -V x11
VLC media player 0.8.5 Janus
[00000287] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `XVID'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.
[00000266] main playlist: stopping playback

I rebuilt vlc via ABS and the problem is corrected, I did not modify the pkgbuild at all.
