In order the support the incoming wave of Yubikeys out of the box, Chromium needs to depend on the libu2f-host library.
Without this lib the key will not work, leaving users wondering whether their device is broken.

The correct functionality can be tested here: https://demo.yubico.com/u2f?tab=register

There is no reference of "u2f-host" in Chromium 46's source code; therefore, I don't see how it could be considered a dependency of Chromium.

I'm guessing the library itself isn't necessary, only the udev rules that ship in libu2f-host and allow user access to the device. In such case, it's up to the user to install the required package(s).

Indeed, the udev rules that are the only ones required. However, without that package the key will not work, leaving the user thinking that Chromium is somehow broken.
Maybe this could be added as an optional dep?

Your concern is justified but I believe it's up to the user to configure the needed permissions for the keys to work in Chromium.

The Yubico website also provides detailed setup information: https://www.yubico.com/faq/enable-u2f-linux/
