Description:
When Prosody is used with the lua-event (libevent) backend DNS resolution breaks when using the newest lua-socket package (20151001-1). See discussion in: https://github.com/diegonehab/luasocket/issues/147. Changes in lua-socket require changes in Prosody to maintain compatibility (http://hg.prosody.im/trunk/rev/86fcc3fa1a97) but since that version of lua-socket hasn't been tagged/released yet, the change has only been applied to Prosody's trunk and not backported to the 0.9 branch.

I'm not sure what the best course of action is but I've successfully fixed the issue for myself by making the change shown in the Prosody commit above to dns.lua at line 626 in Prosody 0.9.8.
