Firefox has a patch included which makes it possible to add language-packs. It would be nice if Thunderbird will have this functionality, too.

This patch doesn't do anything with language packs, it just sets the browser locale to something it fetches from the LANG environment variable. Language packs should work, independant from the patch.

I confirm what Jan de Groot said. Italian .xpi works well for me.

1) install translation with "extensions" tool.
2) change value of "general.userangent.locale" key according to your language (for example "it-IT")

Yes, that`s what I wanted to say. But this patch makes it easy to setup a multilingual installation and to create PKGBUILDs for the different languages.

I agree. It's a simple matter of including the line

pref("intl.locale.matchOS", true);

into /opt/mozilla/lib/thunderbird/defaults/pref/all-thunderbird.js and thunderbird will automatically set its locale according to the system's locale setting if the language pack is available (just tested it, works great). Without this setting, setting the thunderbird language will be rather complicated (as you have to edit some setting in firefox that is more or less hidden).
