Title says all, codecs for Realmedia are not included in the package and Realmedia support cannot be found outside the Win32 codecs. Since Realmedia is used all over the web, I would definitely call it an "essential" codec.

Realplayer codecs are in the codecs package, at least that's what the changelogs and file listings of the upstream "essentials" codecs package say.

Uh right... My bad, they seem to be there.

There is some really weird stuff going on though, Xine doesn't seem to see all the codecs... Can't play RealVideo at all, or some Quicktime movies.

Seems Xine refuse to read real media by legal issue.

MPlayer too AFAICT...

Is there a workaround? This is really annoying as hell.

Download this "all" codecs from mplayer site:
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/all-20060501.tar.bz2

extract all files to /usr/lib/win32

Maybe dev could consider use this instead of essential one to make codecs package.

Oh, I should test the new essential-20060504 to see if this has been solved. Report minutes later.

The answer is NO, so I suggest it's time to change "essential" to "all" if no any other blockers.

The essentials codec package should be enough according to the mplayer homepage, but it seems it isn't. Could you provide me with a realmedia and a quicktime file that doesn't play with the essentials package, but does play with the -all package?

Unplayable quicktime file is available at thread about Totem plugin, here:

http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/4628

The Quicktime files linked to cannot play with only essential codecs, but they did play with the full codec pack.

And for realmedia file with xine, you can grab any rm file from http://southparkx.net

I wanted to report this too, as I was having some videos here that can not be read... I confirm that upgrading to pack "all" instead of "essential" worked for me. Cannot remember where I download the videos, though :(
