Looking at reproducible builds for core packages (based on work done by Allan), I noticed that static libraries contain a timestamp based on the build time. This could be avoided by building binutils with --enable-deterministic-archives, thus instructing ar, ranlib, strip and objcopy to remove (or replace with 0 ) useless timestamp whenever possible.

It seems that binutils is now built with this option in both Debian [0] and Red Hat [1], so with a bit of luck we should not have too much trouble should we decide to enable it.
