DetailsDescription:
I submitted this to the udev developers but they disclaimed responsibility (apparently with good reasons): https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/296 The situation is kind of confusing for new users who are trying to debug a udev rule. One finds out about udev.conf, changes it to say udev_log="debug", doesn't notice any difference. A week later one installs a new kernel and reboots and all of a sudden boot-up takes a whole minute, with messages scrolling by on the screen too quickly to read. Taking pictures of the screen doesn't work. Nothing works. Eventually one trains one's eyes to read very quickly, and then realizes the problem lies with udev. Perhaps the easiest thing to do for a package maintainer, (rather than patching the man page) would be to add text to udev.conf saying something like # See udev.conf(5) for details # Your initrd will need to be rebuilt (with mkinitcpio) before changes to this file are noticed by the kernel # Beware of changing the value of udev_log to "debug", as this can cause excessive output and delay boot-up Hope this isn't too insignificant for a bug report... Additional info: * package version(s) systemd 221 |

Well that's just inaccurate.
Should we add this kind of warning to every file which might end up in the initramfs? No, I'd almost rather that we don't ship udev.conf at all as it's supplanted by generic systemd configuration.
