Details

this is a report of a conflict with packages from extra repos~, gstreamer {gstreamer: versions 0.8.* and earlier} and gstreamer0 {gstreamer: versions 0.10.*} ...

i am assuming the names of the package (gstreamer0) is incorrect and should rather be gstreamer (as opposed to a '0' at the end) ..
this appears to cause severe dependency isuses with other packages that are compiled manually (as opposed to being installed with pacman) ;

scenario~

programs depending on gstreamer verion 0.10.* can only detect the package "gstreamer" {being version 0.8.*} ...
and if gstreamer (0.8.*) is uninstalled and gstreamer0 installe din its place then gstreamer is not detected at all ...

this report was submitted as critical as this naming inconsistency if i may call it that causes dependency issues on all packages in the gstreamer group ... gstreamer~,gst-~

The name of the package is gstreamer0.10, not gstreamer0.
The GStreamer team has made sure that GStreamer 0.6, 0.8 and 0.10 are parallel installable without any problems. On archlinux, it seems this is actually possible, as we have GStreamer 0.8 and 0.10 in the repositories (no need for 0.6, a simple s/0.6/0.8/ gets most 0.6 apps working with 0.8).

For the packages you compile manually: almost every package you get these days has a configure switch to enable a certain version of GStreamer. Some packages prefer 0.8, some other prefer 0.10, but to make sure, always specify the one you want for your package.

This is not a bug IMHO, GStreamer 0.8 and 0.10 on arch work fine. The only bug I can think of is the rhythmbox package that tells you to install GStreamer 0.8 plugins while it uses 0.10.

ok .. thanks for tip.. this was a simple enquiry, however i was advised on submitting it as a bug report, i did in no way think of this as a bug, it just seemed strange that the versions were named differently, i will try to compile now so the program looks for GStreamer0.10 instead of GStreamer ... anyway, thanks for the reply,

p.s : you guys do an absolutely fantastik job, best distro imho
