Details

Description:
after system upgrade, mutt stopped working with:

mutt: error while loading shared libraries: libgnutls.so.28: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

when I downgrade gnutls it works, but other software (i.e. libreoffice) stops working

Check your system for unofficial packages. Mutt itself doesn't link to gnutls but openssl. Probably pulled in trough another package on your system that is either outdated or replaced by a custom build on your side.

Nothing in our repositories links to libgnutls.so.28.

mutt depends on gpgme which in turn depends on gnupg which depends on gnutls.
Start with checking whether you're using the stock gpgme and gnupg.
