I get this error:
Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_i965.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

pkgfile finds no such shared library file.

This isn't a linking issue, vlc is guessing the name. For intel, you should be using the libva backend.

But I have both libva and libva-intel-driver.
Maybe the problem is that libvdpau is also present, as a dep of ffmpeg.

Just configure VLC to use VAAPI. There is no VDPAU for Intel. With the next release of xf86-vidoe-intel, the VDPAU name will be set to va_gl instead of i965 to avoid this confusion. However, the actual solution is not to use va_gl (it's a wrapper), it's to configure your players to use VAAPI.
