Description:

As of 3.18 (this include 3.19), battery duration has been reduced to under 50% of what it was with linux < 3.17.
Merely switching between 3.17 and 3.18/19 proves that the issues is the kernel (and not another recent package).

I've a 2013 MacBook Air 13". The same issue has been reported by many other users of MBAs and MBPs on this thread:

Some have suggested using linux-ck as a workaround, however, I believe that this is a regression (and a pretty big one), but I'm not sure if it's Arch-specific, or upstream.

Battery duration for an idle desktop with 3.17 is ~11-12hs, while 3.19 is ~5hs.

I'm not sure what else I can provide that may help, but I'm willing to provide any outputs that help, or run tests that you may feel are necesary. This does not apply to a single package version, but all versions of linux >= 3.18.

I doubt this is a configuration issue, since switching kernels alters the behaviour *and* several other users report the exact same issues.

The mentioned issue compares Arch vs Ubuntu/Fedora due to the config settings we use. This issue is about a regression in comparison to 3.17. It appears to be different issues with similar symptoms.

Also, from  FS#43910 :

The MacBook Air in question has a Haswell, so I'm not sure if this applies.

I tried building the kernel with the settings suggested in  FS#43910  (Both 250Hz and 1000Hz) just to be doubly sure. I also tried linux-ck, since I understand that it may also have other relevant optimizations.
With both builds, the CPU usage is still higher than pre-3.18, greatly reducing battery life.

Any pointers or anything I can provide to help debug this? I'm kinda running into problems here, because battery is lasting 4-5hs, rather than the usual ~11, so I'm unable to work on the road, at class, etc.

I tried building the kernel with config-3.18.7-200.fc21.x86_64 from  FS#43910 . I got slightly lower CPU usage, and 7.30hs of battery. So there's some improvement there, but it's still lower than linux<=3.17.X, so it looks like that config doesn't override the regression.

Sorry for the noise on this issue, I'm just trying to take good note of anything that might be relevant and help.

CPU usage still SEEMS to be high on my current system compared to other OS's results, but since I've changed my hardware since, I don't have the same before/after metrics to compare as I did with my previous one.
