For which zathura backend? or for all of them?

It was just for poppler. The last change to the pdf engine that I had before that was switching from mupdf months before. On the date of this bug report though, both poppler and poppler-glib where updated.

I made an assumption that others would hit this problem on the same day that I did and hence the low quality bug report. Since no one has commented on this bug since I submitted it and I didn't provide much information, it seems that closing it would probably be best.
