DetailsKDE, by default, uses inotify to monitor directories if FAM or gamin is not running, and amaroK (IIRC) lets KDE watch directories for it. However, if I let KDE use inotify, amaroK doesn't notice if I delete files from a directory it's watching via some external means (e.g. a terminal). Is amaroK suffering from the same problem that briefly afflicted the gnome-menus package, trying to monitor things directly instead of letting other things do the monitoring for it?

FWIW, if you want to use inotify only you just have to boot without running FAM. Try commenting it out in rc.conf, then KDE will only monitor local files...
about fam: i don't use fam:
[damir@asteraceae amarok-base]$ more /etc/rc.conf | grep fam
