Details

The NVidia kernel module include in the nvidia package version 1.0.8178-16 fails to build with kernel26 package version 2.6.16.1-5. This problem also occurred with kernel26 package version 2.6.16.1-4.

To work around this problem:

Revert to an earlier version of the kernel26 package. I am using kernel26 package version 2.6.15.6-2 to work around this problem.

I should have prevented this problem from occuring by including nvidia in the DAEMONS list in /etc/rc.conf.

To reproduce this problem:

1. install kernel26 2.6.16.1-5 with pacman
2. boot to new kernel
3. install nvidia 1.0.8178-16 with pacman
4. the nvidia installer will report the kernel module failed to build. This message will include a path to the installer log.

Attached are two logs and a list of packages on my system.

nvidia-pacman.log is the output from pacman.
nvidia-installer.log is the output from the nvidia installer.
current-packates is the list of packages installed on this system.

Please let me know if I can provide any other information to help with this.

Have a good one!

You're installing -15 according to your logs. nvidia -16 has a patch to work with kernel 2.6.16.

Ah, I see my mistake, and an issue.

My mistake was copying and pasting the version number for the nvidia package from the Arch packages web site without verifying the package version installed on my system. This lead to an incorrect bug report.

Thanks for catching my error.

The Arch packages web site entry for nvidia lists 1.0.8178-16 as the current version. However, when I run "pacman -Syu", pacman does not list the nvidia package as out of date. When I run "pacman -S nvidia", pacman reports "nvidia-1.0.8178-15: is up to date".

It appears my pacman extra package list is out of date. I thought this would be updated when I ran "pacman -Syu".

I'll try to find pacman docs that will tell me what I am doing wrong.

I am convinced my bug report is incorrect. Please close it.

Any ideas why pacman is reporting nvidia-1.0.8178-15: is up to date when nvidia-1.0.8178-16 is available?

Thanks and have a good one.

The first mirror in your /etc/pacman.d/extra file is out of date. Try using the "sortmirrors" command to re-arrange it and possibly find a mirror that isn't out of date.
