Description:
After upgrading from linux-3.18.2-2 to linux-3.18.4-1, xorg-server would not start

Additional info:
Initially showed itself when lxdm tried to start, but errors were same from executing startx or sudo startx.

pacman -Qs xorg-server

local/xorg-server 1.16.3-2 (xorg)
Xorg X server
local/xorg-server-common 1.16.3-2
Xorg server common files

Transition package depending on xorg server utilities

Continued to fail even after I removed all files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/etc/xorg

The /var/log/Xorg.0.log has been overwritten, but it showed very little - just attempts to load ati, vesa, fbdev all of which failed, followed by

(EE) No drivers available
Fatal server error
no screens found

I tried reinstalling xorg-server but there was no change. Switched back to linux-3.18.2-2 and all works again.

What video driver are you using?

And taking your two bug reports together, what is the output of uname -a after you upgrade?
Comment by Jonathan Clark (jc79) - Saturday, 31 January 2015, 16:56 GMT
The video driver was ati i.e. xf86-video-ati was installed before the upgrade. After the upgrade I uninstalled it, and the error symptoms did not change. I imagined I had fallen back to whichever video drivers were installed initially, before I installed xf86-video-ati.

uname -a
Linux jc-arch 3.18.2-2-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Jan 9 07:37:51 CET 2015 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Sorry - I gave you uname before the upgrade. I will have to reapply the upgrade to get the uname. Give me a few minutes.

Ok I have reinstalled the upgrade

uname -a
Linux jc-arch 3.18.4-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Jan 27 20:45:02 CET 2015 x86_64 GNU/Linux

But everything is working - network and X11. I'm very confused, but happy.
