Kernel 3.18 has added the ability to use KConfigs to compress modules on installation:

CONFIG_MODULE_COMPRESS=y
CONFIG_MODULE_COMPRESS_GZIP=y
# CONFIG_MODULE_COMPRESS_XZ is not set

They are hidden in Enable loadable module support/Compress modules on installation.
