DetailsDescription:
Pidgin needs gstreamer0.10-base-plugins and gstreamer0.10-good-plugins for out of the box sound support. They should at least be considered optional. To quickly reproduce the issue go to Tools -> Preferences -> Sound and click the button Preview. It will not play anything unless the missing packages are installed. |

This appears to be intentional: https://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit/packages.git/commit/trunk?h=packages/pidgin&id=120009c1a3837d6db781b9e880b343ee6f8f20b0

I see. It is intentional. It would not be a bad idea to include the missing packages as optional dependencies though. Feel free to decide and close the bug report accordingly.

Voice and video support was re-enabled afterwards again: https://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit/packages.git/commit/trunk?h=packages/pidgin&id=871b523f753855cfc178d43476444c9c4279da27

I see it. Pidgin requires libpurple, which requires farstream-0.1, which requires gstreamer0.10-bad-plugins, gstreamer0.10-base, gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg, and gstreamer0.10-good-plugins. So maybe farstream really needs base-plugins?

I haven't tested voice and video communication so far. GStreamer is required for sound notification.
