The "monstrosity" has a little bit more than 5 mb and is the result of running makepgk here https://github.com/anpieber/pkgbuild-liquibase

How did you get a 5MB tarball out of makepkg from that? Did you accidentally use --allsource instead of --source? The former only gives me an 886 byte tarball (expected size).

Actually in my confusion I've just used makepkg... I'm sorry for the confusion and thank you very much for your help. --source fixed my problem of course.
