No plugins are found, although /usr/share/blender/scripts is full of them.
Using "Update menus" in the scripts window gives:

Error: invalid scripts dir: check console

After reading the install message, is it so hard to figure that the whole folder actually must be copied to ~/.blender ?

I admit that blender for some (upstream)reason beyond my knowledge actually is honouring the locales in /usr/share/blender
BUT EVERYTHING ELSE MUST BE COPIED TO ~

Oh dear, sorry.

I installed Blender some months ago and just started using it, so I could not remember the install messages.

Not honouring scripts in SHAREDIR is pretty crappy, though :(
