Details

From the gnome 2.14 in testing nautilus will not preview files, allow new backgrounds to be added to the 'background manager' or allow pixmap icons to be viewed in the icon browser.

If I view a directory in qgview nautilus will then show the thumbnails associated with it but will not self generate.

Probably just some dependency or testing bugs.

Done already - Do you think a complete deinstall / reinstall of gnome would possibly resolve?

make sure you have pacman -S gnome gnome-extra , you are probably missing an program which provides the functionality.

Also i checked it on multiple systems and it works just fine.

Yup - Done that too and it's all there. I'll try removing and reinstalling 2.14 (right down to an empty /opt/gnome) and see if that sorts the issue. Is there any way to 'reset' a users gnome config other than deleting all the .gnome* and .gconf* files? That said i've tried with a new user and the problem remains. Will post back once re-install has been done.

OK, done a full gnome removal and then restore from testing - still no preview and failure to display desktop icons at all.

On login I get an error 'Icon 'web-browser.png' not found'' but that really appears to be just the start.

OK, this is just strange...

When I start gnome from gdm the desktop icons, menu icons, etc don't work at all....

BUT

When I run gnome-session from a console in a failsafe X session from gdm everything works just right...

HELP!!
