Detailsmate-desktop is just a common library+GSettings schemas+help files, not really useful on its own. So I think the following (optional) dependencies should belong to mate-session-manager instead (just remove them from mate-desktop, and add them to mate-session-manager):
- ttf-dejavu - lightdm-gtk2-greeter - onboard - orca |

mate-desktop 1.8.1-2 and mate-session-manager 1.8.1-3 have just been released to [community] that implement the changes you've outlined, except that `ttf-dejavu` is a depend since installing MATE on a fresh Arch Linux install without `ttf-dejavu` will cause several MATE applications to crash.
