Details
gnome-session Ver: 3.14.0-1
wayland Ver: 1.6.0-1 linux Ver: 3.16.3-1 xorg-server Ver: 1.16.1-1 Starting gnome from "startx" with "exec gnome-session --session=gnome-wayland" in ~/.xinitrc, gnome-session starts Xorg, which then exits a few seconds later. Starting with "exec env GDK_BACKEND=wayland gnome-session --session=gnome-wayland" starts Xorg but does not exit, leaving a black screen and no way to terminate the session without using a remote terminal. Using only "exec gnome-session" starts gnome on Xorg. Is there some other "proper" way to start gnome on wayland? James |

I see that "gnome-session --session=gnome-wayland" from the command line will start gnome, but "env GDK_BACKEND=wayland gnome-session --session=gnome-wayland" will simply exit immediately.
I have to wonder, then, how does gdm start gnome with wayland? I presume that gdm still runs on Xorg, and that it would have to terminate Xorg and then start gnome on wayland if a wayland session is chosen. And then, similarly, gnome-session is not checking to see if Xorg is running, and not automatically terminating Xorg to start gnome on wayland.
Hmm - should gnome-session with "--session=gnome-wayland" check to see if Xorg is running and automatically terminate Xorg?
