A lot of dvdrip tools depend on mplayer compiled with xvid enabled. Would it be a problem to enable xvid in the repo's mplayer package?

xvidcore is in extra, while mplayer is in current. And since packages form current shall not be dependent from packages in extra this probably won't happen. Sorry.

Why not put mplayer into extra? In my opinion a base install doesn't need any x stuff, mplayer could be used without X but anyway I do think it's time to check out things in current, we have no standard here.

Maybe you mistook it, maybe not. It's not about the base install, which is the minimum set of packages. If you talk about current, which ist the content of a standard Arch install CD, then, this shouldn't be a minimum set of packages but leave the user witha useable set of programs covering most tasks of an everyday usage.
Extra, Unstable and Community is everything beyond that.

Sorry, yes I mistook it. But does that hurt to put mplayer into extra?

I would not suppose mplayer to be "most task" stuff ...

Now that xvidcore has been moved to current, could you enable xvid in mplayer?
