gnome-shell (and also gnome-control-center) really only depend on the libnm-gtk library; it'd be great to transition the gnome-shell package to this, with an optdepends on network-manager-applet (as I think that still adds a tiny bit of extra functionality?). I'm running g-shell + g-c-c here perfectly fine, after rebuilding to depend only on libnm-gtk. The result is that network-manager-applet doesn't start, saving a bit of memory. nm-applet is used (at least) to ask PIN code for mobile broadband devices.
