I did some research, spoke with the debian wpa_supplicant maintainer and part time madwifi developer on irc.

Madwifi supports standard wext ioctls, and no longer requires modification to wpa_supplicant to use the madwifi ioctls. The madwifi ioctls are only required on kernels older than 2.6.14, and 2.4 which iirc, none of which Arch supports.

It's also better that you use the wext interface, as it is actively maintained, whereas the ioctls provided by the madwifi headers are 'abandoned' and unmaintained. If you have problems with the wext interface, then you should report it, rather than workaround it using the unmaintained madwifi ioctls.

To use the wext interface, pass '-D wext'.
